Frequently Asked Questions

How does this calculator work?

The tool calculates the partitions needed for your text index and vector index separately. It then recommends the smallest (most cost-effective) tier that can support the larger of those two requirements.

Why doesn't changing 'Number of Documents' always change the tier?

This happens when your Text Index Size is the primary driver for the tier selection. The number of documents must be high enough for the vector memory to require more partitions than the text index already does. Try lowering the text size to see the impact of the document count more clearly.

What overhead is included for vectors?

The calculation includes a 20% overhead on top of the raw vector data size. This is a general estimate for the HNSW (Hierarchical Navigable Small Worlds) indexing algorithm used by Azure AI Search.

Is this calculator 100% accurate?

This tool provides a reliable estimate based on official Azure guidelines. However, the actual storage for your text index can vary. The best practice is to build a small, representative sample index in Azure to verify your true storage needs.

This calculator uses the latest service limits (post-April 2024) and provides an estimate. HNSW vector index overhead is estimated at 20%. Always verify with the official Azure documentation and test with a representative index.
